Fast Plants Introduction - Hoover HS

Before students begin work on their Bioenergy-centered projects, I'm asking them to go through the process of growing a generation of Fast Plants.  Students should learn how to take care of their plants, pollination techniques and some general plant biology.  We'll also discuss some background information on Fast Plants, including classification and species diversity.

The picture above shows our class's seed germination Petri dish experiment.  These were "planted" on 8/28/09 using the technique discussed on the www.fastplants.org website.

Our newly-installed light boxes.  Ordered through Carolina Biological using CBiRC funding.

Our initial set-up.  Fast Plants near the light, seed germination experiment on the floor of the light box.  A piece of styrofoam insultation (one side is reflective) covers the opening, reflecting much of the 'lost' light back into the box.  Seems to work well :-)

Nice combination of seeds germinating where they are visible and seeds in soil. If you prefert o see the roots grow down along the back of the Petri dish instead of trying to go down INTO the back of the Petri dish, try germinating the seeds with the dishes on their edge (this is described on page 9 of the genetics booklet that can be downloaded from the Fast Plants site. It's just another option.

How are your plants doing?

Yep...I remembered that about 3 minutes after taking these pictures!  We didn't use the wicking idea where you stand them in water, but they stayed we long enough for the students to look at the newly-germinated seedlings with a dissecting microscope...something many had never done before.

Started the BioII Bioenergy project on Wednesday.  Plants will grow fine, but I'm unsure what background my students are going to need regarding carbon cycle, basic plant physiology/structure, etc.  The project will culminate in a poster session (I hope) sometime in January.
